Egg Tonicity
Solution tonicity : The solution to water percentage.
Hypertonic solutions causes the egg to become smaller, while hypotonic makes the egg become bigger. To remove the shell of the egg, the isotonic solution B was added to a beaker and the eggs were placed inside it. Mass: Egg 1: 89.2 ounces Egg 2: 88.0 ounces Egg 3: 92.7 ounces Solutions: Egg 1: 0% NaCl: 200mL Di water (Isotonic) Egg 2: 5% NaCl: (5g NaCl + 95g DI water)*2 (Hypotonic) Egg 3: 20% NaCL: (20g NaCl + 80g DI water)*2 (Hypertonic) Egg 1 should stay the same mass and same circumference, while Egg 2 should get bigger, it is sitting in a hypotonic solution. Egg 3 should end up getting smaller because it is settling in a hypertonic solution, there is more solution causing it to shrink. After a day: Egg 1: 89.2 ounces (Isotonic) No change. Egg 2: 90.2 ounces (Hypotonic) Gained 2.2 ounces. Egg 3: 93.6 ounces (HYpertonic) Gained 0.9 ounces. |
My predictions about what would happen did turn out to be right for two out of the three eggs. Egg 1 settling in an isotonic solution did stay the same mass, also egg 2 which was settling in a hypotonic solution gained a significant 2.2 ounces over the coarse of a day. Although I expected to have egg 3 go down in weight it did end up gaining a merely 0.9 ounces over the coarse of a day.
